She Will Write Til She Drops Into A Pop Lyric Induced Trance Channelling the spirit world, Jen will access pop lyric afterlife in a durational performance til she drops into an automatic writing trance. What will happen if she writes the lyrics of a Lady Gaga song over and over? An experiment that is most scientific; an investigation that is most Dada; a lot of pens and paper.

Bennett’s recent works have placed animal subjects in a new context, a prominent example of which is last year’s Dachshund UN involving dozens of sausage dogs. At Tiny Stadiums Bennett has prepared a short film to attract and celebrate the often detested Ibis birds of Sydney. Look for his work in a discreet corner of the park on the corner of John St and Erskineville Road.

Transplanted surfaces explores the textures of our urban environment. Beth Arnold will morph, translate and recontextualise fragments of walls, patches of ground and skins of objects into sculptural posters. Throughout February 22 to March 7 2010 we invite you to experience stirring contemporary art by Australia’s finest emerging artists. These provocative and exciting projects consider art and its social relationship to public space, and are made specifically for you, the people of Erskineville and beyond.

Works span a range of mediums including video, performance, music, live art, participation, installation and duration and aim to lure the curious, and delight those who unintentionally stumble upon them throughout the village - in streets, shops, pubs and parks.Keep your eyes out for festival staff and helpers who are happy to point you in the direction of the next extraordinary experience.

An experiment that has preoccupations with hair and its daily management. Emma Michelis exhibits a variety of her work as a hairdresser in brilliant synthesis of form and content. Bunheads focuses on the technical side of the up-do, by styling regular peoples hair into various special kinds of curated buns. Hair, in all it’s brilliance, is taken out of it’s usual backstage habitat and re-contextualised in the front of house.

BunHeads is an experimental exhibition preoccupied with hair and its daily management.

From 3pm Saturday, October 17th, PACT will be operating as a weird kind of hairdressers, with resident Hairdresser Emma Michaelis doing what she does best, and putting several models hair up into a specially selected group of buns, as selected by the Quarterbred BunHeads curators Tim Maybury and Jade Markham.

with: SIRENS playing music all afternoon, live video projections of close up's of the hair being coiffed as it happens.

BunHeads is a companion event happening just before the performance afternoon, 'Monthly Friend' commences at 5pm.

Because everyone loves a bun.

MONTHLY FRIEND #3 : DEAD OR ALIVE

Monthly Friend is a performance event curated by the Bake Sale for Art team.

The author is dead.
The aura is dead.
The critic is dead.
God is dead.
Theatre is dead.
Art is dead.

But hey, let’s not get overly maudlin. The theme for this Monthly Friend, ‘Dead or Alive’, questions our conception of how ideas, forms, texts and spaces may ‘live’ or ‘die’. Are these bold proclamations of death premature? (The author is still very much alive in mainstream theatre and literature, at least.) And what is the flipside of death? When the author dies the audience becomes alive, and that ain’t so bad is it? Monthly Friend October also celebrates the merging of live and not-live forms. Contemporary arts need not these distinctions! So ah, let’s all take a leaf out of George Romero’s book and let the dead live again. And let the living dead suck the brains out of the living, so that the living die and eventually become the living dead and go out looking for more living. Hope to see you there.

Quarterbred warmly welcomes four new directors to the front line:

Tim Maybury is a musician, writer, curator, broadcaster and educator in art theory.

Sarah Rodigari is a live artist who creates performance, video and installation through public encounters and social exchange. She is also one half of Panther.

Matthew Kneale is a Melbourne-based project director focused on making live performance/installations in public spaces. He is also a set and costume designer who has worked nationally on opera, dance and theatre. www.matthew.collabo.net

Jade Markham is an artist-in-general who also works at the library, studies and performs collaboratively. She makes super 8 films and slides too.

The involvement of these new directors may see quarterbred activities extend to Victoria and Wollongong...

throughout Erskineville.

For the Tiny Stadiums Festival Quarterbred will
program projects that have innovative audience relationships their core.

The overall festival aims to include: a season of two performance/ live works
at PACT theatre, a video library, a rooftop cinema, artist talks, a launch
party and a weekend of site-specific live and visual artworks in Erskineville village.

Check out our website www.quarterbred.blogspot.com to get a sense of what the 2009 festival entailed. Interactive, site specific and cross-artform projects are particularly encouraged. All projects must take place in Erskineville.

You may like to respond to one of these spaces in your idea: PACT theatre, A primary school, A railway station, Erskineville town hall, A church. A vacant lot, An empty shopfront, A Laundromat, A pub, A bus stop, A café, A playground, A small park, A parking lot, A street tour of Erskineville, A post office.

Your idea need not be themed around these spaces but be flexible to fit within these public spheres. Please note not all of these spaces are confirmed as available at this stage.

In your application please include:

- Your contact details and paragraph bio
- A description of your idea
- The audience experience your project
- Basic technical requirements.

You will be asked to present a development or talk about you idea in late October 2009.

Artists will receive:
- An artist fee
- Inclusion in a large marketing campaign for the festival
- A project manager
- Access to a production manager and pact resources.

QUARTERBRED SEEKS NEW CO-DIRECTOR

Quarterbred is looking for a new director!

Quarterbred is a Sydney -based a three year old artist run initiative. Quarterbred supports artistic development and innovative projects though programming and co-ordinating events and residencies. We aim to encourage risk taking, diversity, collaboration, cross –pollination and innovation across artforms. Quarterbred is a resident of PACT space and also curates the annual Tiny Stadiums festival. Artists and curators from around Australia are eligible to apply to be part of our yearly program. Past programs have included experimental sound events, a contemporary arts symposium, performance nights, site-specific installations and a variety of local and interstate residencies.

Quarterbred is part of the PACT program each year. It also functions as an independent body, free to develop events and programs in other venues.

The role of director is voluntary. If funding permits, curators fees are included for specific projects.

The new member will join the existing seven directors in curating, producing and administrating each Quarterbred program. It is both a creative role and a co-ordinators role. The diversity of tasks ranges from writing grant applications to opening beers to selecting applications to designing promotional material, to supporting artists.

Quarterbred aims to build community,creativity and exchange in Sydney and beyond. All tasks are spread evenly between directors, in both the lead up to the program and during the events.

Quarterbred directors are given priority in the program for curation of events. Quarterbred directors are also able to apply as artists to the program.

Quarterbred directors should :

* Be able to program and support diverse projects from a wide range of artforms.

* Carry out expected duties and be open to training to gain skills for these duties.

* Support the collective in its goals.

The new Quarterbred director must commit to:

* Attending a minimums of twelve meetings a year

* To support a minimum of four weeks of Quarterbred programming each year

* A minimum of 12 months in the position.

The Splinter Orchestra are one of the few large-scale improvisational ensembles working in Australia, or anywhere else for that matter.
Formed in 2003, the group has comprised of up to 50 members. "Our focus is on developing elements of performance within an installation comprising of: photographic slides, inter-changing projections of text, and a mat made with LED's embedded into layers of latex. Sourcing the text from a poem by Edgar Allen Poe, the working title is 'While Our Husbands Were at Church'."

ADRIANNE SEMMENS, HENRIETTA BAIRD AND ROSALEE PEARSON:
Creative Development choreographing a dance movement piece/vocabulary based on native flora.
We will explore plant/seed cycles, germination, environmental influences, survival mechanisms, layering and identity.The movement created is to be further explored by visual layering.

MATTHEW ROCHFORD:
Using the humble radio alarm clock I create the ultimate wake-up machine! I have spent the last couple of years sourcing discarded and unwanted clock radios and currently have a collection of 47. I will create a time-phase system, which sees the clock radios go off one-by-one at a set time which results in a gradual cacophony of radio, buzzer and beeping sounds. The clock radios create a sort of 'domino' effect as they change time one after the other and the idea is that the installation could be viewed throughout the day with a performance each night at say, 8:03 when they are set to go off. This performance incorporates the lights and sounds of the alarm clock with a sleeping-waking dance performed by the artist. An additional element is that the event can be recorded and played the next night so that the cacophony will multiply each night.
This work will be performed with The Splinter Orchestra.

Asisthesis is a project exploring the ways in which music and sound can be represented and experienced by the body. Through the senses ofsight, smell and touch, the aim of Aisthesis is to create music that forges neurological links and create a multi- sensory experience of music.

Haze and smoke machines filled with self-produced fragrances are expelled into the audience and psychedelic animation is projected onto many walls, wrapped in a soundscape that drifts and snaps dramatically about.

The Word Game project is a large scale ongoing video project in which the content of the work is completely user generated. Participants are invited to be filmed asking questions and giving answers. The result is an ongoing word game that produces sequence of random Q and A that are absurd, hilarious, political and eerily profound. Word Game project asks the Erkineville community to communicate in a completely disconnected manner.

Video Hero hijacks the television screens at the Rose of Australia in Erskineville and replaces the games of football and daytime television with the work of seven Sydney based video artists. This project responds to the proliferation of screens in the public domain and in places of leisure and recreation, such as the local pub or club. The artists selected respond directly to this environment in which sporting stars and celebrities compete for the attention of the punters. They reinvent and reinterpret the representation of the ‘hero,’ tuning the audience into alternative channels that reveal a flexing bicep clad in gold leaf, or an amateur hammer thrower swinging aimlessly in the park.

Quarterbred is boldly bringing together some of Sydneys most challenging artists engaged in contemporary arts for their Decemeber program.

THEY ARE:

Kenzie Larson The word game project
Involves the participation of many different players filming contributions that will make up a giant computer mediated word game.

The Safari team (Melb)
Will construct a subterranean sleaze factory during their seven day residency. The finale will involve a synchronized performance with twenty people inside this factory to be included in their new video Safari Team Dig to China.

James Harney
A blindfolded figure clad in black walks into frame, carrying a broomstick. A large square shaped piñata emblazoned with ‘Post-modern Piñata’ is suspended in the centre.

Frances Barrett
Will undertake a residency at Quarterbred to develop The Pink Piece, which is an absurdist eulogy to a drowned flamingo. It will take the form of a 'melancholic musical': a macabre experience of failure, story-telling and animal costumes. Or not.

Zoe Scoglio and Guests (Melb)
Armed with a video projector, some triangles, hair and torches, Zoe will be undertaking shape-shifting experiments. She will reconfigure the mundane and banal to create twilight worlds inhabited with shimmering uncertainties, triangular apparitions and sounds turning solid. Torchlight discoveries will reveal creatures in corners, glistening portholes and mounds of what?

Sally Lewry & Teik Kim Pok
In a week-long laboratory, provocateurs Sally Lewry and Teik-Kim Pok, inspired by the popularity of performed interventionist art practice, will explore the notion of 'Socialised Urban Performance' through the staging of a one-off site-based event that cuts across our technology-filtered practice of human interaction. Sally and Teik-Kim will spend the last three days of their lab with an invited troupe of individuals in creating a familiar and tongue-in-cheek social experiment in an as-yet undisclosed location, which will culminate in a moderated evening sharing with photo and video documentation of the process.

HARD Party
Thirty artists involved in the HARD Party project will come together to develop work considering binge culture. The results will be shown on a party boat on Sydney Harbour in January 2009.

The Jackknife Twinset (Mish Grigor and Joseph O'farrel)
Are in development to create a new work, 'The Bar Room Brawl'. It is a work on video that is presented in chapters exploring a number of short visual narratives. The work will be accompanied by a number of acoustic, live and recorded sounds that will be played in a "mini cinema" by the artists.

A dionysian celebration of degradation and failure as the new success in an endurance anti-talent show format. Quarterbred, is an artist run iniative supporting emerging artists engaged in innovation, experimentation and cross-pollination. Quarterbred is now open for applications for events during two weeks in 2008:
DECEMBER 8th –21st

ARTS EVENTS for one to three days/nights.
Open to all artforms, particularly projects engaging with more than one artform.
Performances, discussions, exhibitions, screenings, sound, workshops, whatever you can throw at us.

- Pact theatre, a large, resourced warehouse theatre/art space in the heart of Erskineville (seats up to 150) (note: off- site activities will also be considered) - Access to technical equipment and technical advice - Up to $200 towards your project - Promotion of your event including color postcards and media - Front of House and Bar staff for your event. - An artists dinner with all Quarterbred artists Artists must: -Be committed to promoting their event. -Become a member of Pact ($15/$20) Please be aware that bar sales go to PACT theatre and door price is negotiable with Quarterbred if you choose to charge entry.

Semaphore is an evening of creative collaborations and discourse in action.

This event draws together collaborative practices across sound, dance, poetry, visual arts and social situations. Such diverse performative processes and aesthetic relations will play out with live events and critical discussion.

Collaborative invention and live performance may be associated with flag-signalling and other secret systems of communication. Semaphore stages a discursive space and time to engage with methods and motivations in building collaboration.

Nick Keys + Astrid Lorange present Waking Hours, a poetic expedition through 24 hours of each other's language. Norie Neumark, Maria Miranda, Lucas Ihlein and Anne Walton build discourse expanding on their collaborative practices. Ben Byrne and Jes Tyrrell improvise loops of sound and video in their first collaboration together. Jessica Oliveri creates ‘dancestallations' where dancing girls awkwardly make their way through yoga inspired steps. Peter Newman and Jon Hunter bring the night to a dramatic close with Delirium Tremens, their latest collaboration of guitar and laptop doom metal.

Sunday June 22nd: (Afternoon) NEXTWAVE TSUMAI: Artist talks/Show and Tell from Sydney’s top emerging artists fresh from their seasons at the Melbourne’s Nextwave 2008. Nextwave is the biennial festival of genre-busting new work by the newest wave of Australian artists. Featured panelists will include: Spat and Loogie and co, Brown Council, Post, Eddie Sharp, Clare Britton and Matt Prest (The Tent), Keith Lim, James Brown and Kenzee McKenzee. 2pm A FREE event!!

Sunday June 22nd: (Evening) THE TIME IS NOW A night of short works from some of Sydney's most exciting young performance makers. Team Mess present KILLING DON and bring their signature, erm, mess. Katherine Beckett has a story that needs to be told; COLOURED DIGGER and Amity Yore presents a new solo work beginging with the idea of mindfullness. Laura Castagnini our artist in residence will have open studio time. $7 from 7pm

SATURDAY 28th GIANT ROLLER DISCO PARTY Melbourne artists Tai Snaith and Narinda Reeders present the fruits of their residency and host a roller party..bring your skates and roller manouvres, roller blades welcome as are the roller-skate challenged...! 8pm FREE EVENT/CLOSING OF JUNE QUARTERBRED!

The first Quarterbred for 2008 begins this month with a new batch of artist residencies and events. June Quarterbred will showcase the unique practice of more than 15 artists and collectives who are inspired by ideas of hybridity, experimentation and exchange. June 16 through 29 at Pact Space.
